MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
The key to effective communication is storytelling.
Once upon time ...
In a land far, far away ...
It's human nature to make meaning out of experiences and it is also human nature to want to share that meaning with others. And when we think about the way humans interact, it's easy to see that creating a narrative is necessary.
In our personal lives, storytelling is how we start to get to know each other. How romantic dates begin, how friendships form, how families remember their collective histories. Stories take the place of 'just the facts' and allow us the space to embellish the size of the fish we caught or the depths we dived to create a visually rewarding equivalent of 'you should've been there!'
But we're often limited by our ability to tell the right story in the right way. We have to find the beginning, the middle, and the end and in the right order. We hide the twists and turns as long as we can while seeking out the gasp! oh my! and wow! responses when our audience finally sees them. We create characters out of those around us: a villain out of the neighbor with the barking dog or a hero out of the grocery clerk who double-bagged the wine.
Everyone plays a part in the stories we tell ourselves.
And, in business, the narrative is a bit more controlled and must be performed a bit more simply. It starts with identifying audience expectations and meeting them with polished creativity that does not neglect the human touch. In business, characters emerge more organically and no character shines more brightly than the narrator: you. And in business, there's always one story we find ourselves panicked to answer: tell me about yourself.
Are you prepared to tell your story? Can I help you find your narrative?
Tell me more here.
